The Art of Christmas Wishing

By Aksinia Khlamova

Once upon a time, in a country full of snow there was a little girl. If you saw her, you would never think that there might be anything special about that girl. As all little, and not very little, boys and girls she loves Christmas and was anticipating each year when this magical time began. At the year when she turned 5, her parents told her about Christmas wish at a big family table full of festive dishes and drinks. They told little girl that on a Christmas night she could make one wish which would always come true. The girl was confused as there were so many things she wished for… Dolls, toys, books, cartoons, dresses and huge teddy bear… Deep inside she felt it would not be fair to use one wish for any of those things so she asked her mom: “Mommy, what is your Christmas wish about?” The mother looked at her child with a smile and kindly replied: “Each year I wish that all my dearest and nearest stay healthy and wealthy and don’t have that many reasons to be sad.” The little girl sighed and as she could create any better wish, she wished the same…

When the girl was 11, she changes the tradition and for the first time she wished something different. She wished to have her ears pierced and to look same beautiful as her fellow girls. The girl knew that it was almost impossible as the doctor told her parents that there were very few good specialists in town who could do it for kids with eye sight problems. Only WISH could help… The next morning she found an envelope with money, a pair of beautiful earrings with small rubies and a note from Santa: “Use this money wisely and make yourself pretty.” That Christmas our girl believed in the power of Christmas wish…

There were many other wishes and all of them came true: trips, entrance to the desired universities, the perfect boyfriend, a car, moving to a different country, great job… Everything that was once so important to her.

Christmas in MonacoYears passed, the girl turned 25, right before that Christmas she had a fight with her perfect boyfriend and was alone in a foreign country for Christmas. She was sad and lonely. She wished to never ever be alone for Christmas and other holidays again. The boyfriend came back but later he betrayed her badly and left her with a broken heart. No job, no friends, no amazing life could fix it and she felt even lonelier than before… That year, she did herself the most important self-gift – she bought a little puppy-girl.  That dog became a true friend and a new family member. The girl realized that only true friends and family were so important to her. The next Christmas she wished to meet her one true friend and to walk this life with him side by side and to make their families and friends happy…

Some years later, at a big family festive Christmas dinner a little girl asked her mom: “Mommy, what is your Christmas wish about?” The mother looked at her child and then into her own mother’s eyes and with a smile kindly replied: “Each year I wish that all my dearest and nearest stay healthy and wealthy and don’t have that many reasons to be sad.” The little girl sighed and she wished the same…

Let all your Christmas wishes come true!

Merry Christmas.
